Clinically led residential mental health support in White River, South Africa

The Ark is a residential mental health retreat in White River, South Africa, that provides structured, individualised care for adults navigating a range of mental health challenges, neurodivergence, and co-occurring conditions.

Our clinical team – comprising on-site psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and specialist practitioners – works collaboratively with each individual to develop a programme that reflects their specific needs, history and goals.

All admissions follow a thorough assessment process to ensure The Ark is the right environment for each individual.

Mental health presentations

The Ark supports adults living with the following presentations:

Depression

Persistent low mood, loss of motivation, emotional exhaustion and finding it hard to function day-to-day – including depression that has partially responded to treatment but not fully resolved.

Anxiety disorders

Generalised anxiety, social anxiety, health anxiety and related presentations. Effective anxiety treatment in South Africa at The Ark goes beyond medication, to incorporate psychoeducation, coping skills development and – where appropriate – structured exposure work.

PTSD and trauma

For those carrying the weight of past experiences that continue to affect daily functioning, relationships and emotional wellbeing.

OCD

Obsessive-compulsive presentations requiring structured, evidence-based therapeutic input within a calm and consistent residential environment.

Burnout and emotional
exhaustion

Chronic stress and burnout that has moved beyond what rest alone can address. This might require structured clinical input, lifestyle guidance and space to step away from the pressures of daily life.

ADHD and ADD

For adults whose attention, focus and executive functioning difficulties are significantly affecting their quality of life, and who would benefit from structured residential support alongside clinical assessment and management.

Autism spectrum disorders

The Ark offers a residential therapeutic environment for Autistic individuals in South Africa who do not require traditional inpatient psychiatric care, have no dependency conditions, and are not seeking a rehabilitation setting. It benefits those seeking a calm, structured, low-stimulation environment focused on nervous system regulation and emotional stabilisation.

*We do not offer “treatment” for Autism, ADHD or ADD

Complex and co-occurring presentations

Where multiple difficulties are present simultaneously, The Ark’s multidisciplinary approach ensures all aspects of an individual’s presentation are considered within a single, integrated programme.

What The Ark does not provide

Where The Ark is not the right fit, we will always do our best to help guide individuals toward a more appropriate setting.

To ensure The Ark is the right setting for every individual who comes through our doors, we are transparent about the presentations we are not best equipped to support:

  • Active suicidal or self-harm risk
  • Psychosis or acute psychiatric instability
  • Aggressive or challenging behaviours
  • Primary addiction presentations (better supported by our colleagues at White River Manor)

This is not an exhaustive list, The Ark reserves the right to make discretionary decisions at any point.

Where The Ark is not the right fit, we will always do our best to help guide individuals toward a more appropriate setting.

FAQs

The Ark is a purpose-built residential mental health retreat in White River, South Africa. It provides clinically-led, individually tailored care for adults navigating depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, burnout and other presentations. We are not an acute psychiatric facility or crisis centre. We support adults who are stable enough to engage in structured therapeutic work but need more consistency and clinical input than outpatient care alone can provide.

A referral from a therapist or psychiatrist isn’t required for mental health presentations, but is recommended. For the Wellness programme, a GP referral is sufficient.
